MR TOAST HAS A NEW BOOK
Dan Goodsell just released his newest Mr Toast book, called Kaleidoscope. Again, Dan has created an all ages book that anyone and everyone can enjoy. Inside you’ll find his funny one panel cartoons, paintings, artwork and photographs of Mr Toast and the gang. Hey, there’s a photo inside taken by me!
It has a snazzy slick glossy hardcover that instantly takes me back when I was a kid reading all those Wonder Books. Also, I can’t wait to mail my nephews their copies as they always go nuts for anything Mr Toast.
You can purchase your very own book on Etsy.
Dan will be at WonderCon this weekend. If you’re going to the show, make sure you pay Dan a visit and pick up a copy of Kaleidoscope. I betcha he’ll even sign it for you!

THE SUN VS. PLUTO
Cue the 1950's Sci-Fi B-Movie music for this post!
I guess my favorite thing to do when I was a kid, was to draw. It was a fun way to act out crazy and wild stories inspired by too many movies, TV shows and comic books. Most of my drawings were either created while watching TV at night or sitting in class daydreaming instead of listening to the teacher. Back in the 4th grade I came up with an epic story of galactic proportions inside my school notebook.
I called it The Sun vs. Pluto. For eons the Sun Beasts of the Sun and the Ice Things of Pluto were dreaded enemies. The Sun Beasts used their heat powers to melt their nemesis from Pluto and the Ice Things used their cold powers to freeze their enemies from the Sun.
For some reason I always enjoyed drawing these Heat Miser and Snow Miser mutations and for the next year or so I kept on drawing ‘em. Unfortunately, just these six drawings survived.
The last two drawings were probably created using the Big Banana Ink Crayon markers and if I remember right this was the end battle of the two kings. I’m sure I used up my sound effects quota for the battle.
At least it ended on a happy note and the Sun Beasts and Ice Things became friends.

ZOWIE Z-O-O-M INTO DREAMLAND WITH BATMAN
Zowie is right! This might be the coolest, the bestest and the most fantasticest kid's bedspread ever, ever, ever, ever, ever and double ever to infinity ever! What a deal! For only $13.88, a kid could fall asleep at the wheel of the Batmobile!
If you take a look at the full page scan from this 1966 National Bellas Hess catalog, you’ll see the official Two-Face bedspread in blazing Joker purple located below the Batmobile spread.
Wow, compared to the Two-Face bedspread's $9.99 price, the Batmobile bedspread is kind of expensive at $13.88. Did you know the average salary back in 1966 was only $46.00? Holy Highway Robbery, Batman!
---update--- Here's a pic of the bedspread taken from an eBay auction.

14 SCHOOL VALENTINES FROM MY VALENTINE BOX
Happy Valentine’s Day! Unlike yesterday, today is a lucky day because I found my box of school Valentine’s again. (I made the box in 4th grade.) I found them in 2007 and posted 14 days of the mushy little cards. Then I lost the box and deprived all of you neato readers out there and missed V-Day in 2008. This time you get 14 cards all in one day. All the cards were given to me by my elementary classmates in the 1970's and early 80's.
This spaced out card was from David. You'll need to stand on your head to read this one.
Hard to believe that I didn't stick this sticker on my notebook. Not signed.
Halloween and Valentine's Day collide with this Scarecrow card. From Cheryl.
If a dragon should ask to be your Valentine, be sure to say yes no matter what! From Candy.
I'll take Supergirl and Wonder Woman as my Valentines any day! From Eric.
On the back, "I'm frequently called Jumping Jack, for I have an unusual knack - I can hop up to Mars, even jump over stars, ever since I sat down on a tack!" From Joey.
This card came from Miss. Cooper, my 4th grade teacher and one of my favorite teachers from elementary.
On the back, "If you'll be my Valentine, I'll jump for joy!" From Cory.
On the back, "Sid Centipede says, I'll admit these brand-new shoes give me a fit. Then pairs feel just fine and have quite a nice shine, but the last forty pinch me a bit." From Derek.
This card, just gives you a warm fuzzy feeling. From Tara.
This one seems a bit older looking than the late 70's. From Sean.
Wow, this card is cool because it has a crossword puzzle on the back. From Jeni.
On the back, "owei oemfienv fmekfo ieqoei qpem rmvol* *That's Martian for, be my Valentine!" From Shelley
I hope this kitty doesn't run with those scissors! From Tracy
See you next year with another batch from my old school box of Valentine's. (Unless I lose 'em again.)
GRIMACE WAS HERE
Grimace was at my local McDonald's and I missed him. You know, I've met a lot of neat people in my life, but I've never had the chance to meet the great purple milkshake lover, Grimace. Too bad I was out of town last Saturday because I guarantee you I would've been in line with all the eight year olds waiting to have my picture taken with him.
Luckily, I had my Polaroid camera in the car to at least document his arrival. I wonder how the bake sale did? Did they sell apple & cherry pies and McDonaldland cookies?

SUNSET DRIVE-IN THEATRE WASHINGTON, MO ARTIFACT
I'm always picking up vintage movie theater advertising give-aways and this Sunset Drive-In Theatre key chain/coin holder was the perfect little find. A few years ago I rescued it out of a flea market junk box labeled one dollar choice. "I'll buy that for a dollar!"
Ooh ahh. Look at that, it even glows-in-the-dark!
(Disclaimer - I had to photoshop the glow effect, as it glows way to faint for my camera to pick up)

THE SHOCKING TRUTH - 1965 GREAT BOOKS AD
The stigmata created by Fredric Wertham’s infamous book Seduction of the Innocent was still being used to scare parents. At least that’s what Great Books was trying to convey to parents in this 1965 magazine ad.

50 YEARS AGO TODAY BUDDY, RITCHIE & THE BIG BOPPER DIED
Today is the 50th anniversary of that dreadful day when the great Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. “Big Bopper” Richardson perished in a plane crash outside Clear Lake, Iowa.
Their last concert was at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake during the Winter Dance Party tour.
This historic ballroom was designated by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum as an official Rock and Roll Hall of Fame landmark. The ceremony took place just a few days ago.
Every music fan should put this place on their “must visit” list. The photos posted here are from my visit in 1997.
