SQUIRREL TOWN GRAVOIS MILLS, MO POSTCARD

I have no information about Squirrel Town and I didn't know it existed until I found this postcard last week. It was located in Gravois Mills which is part of the Lake of the Ozarks here in Missouri. The card is probably from the 1950's.

The funny thing is that lady is letting a squirrel drink Coca-Cola from a bottle.

You know, I wonder if Squirrel Town had a little squirrel mayor or a little squirrel sheriff. Maybe there was a little squirrel school house with tiny little squirrel students. If they had a school then they probably had a little squirrel church with a little squirrel congregation. More I think about it they probably even had a little squirrel fire department and they might've had a little squirrel . . .

Ok, I better quit before I go nuts!

  1. Now I know where Uncle Walt got the phrase "Happiest place on Earth".

The owner of Squirrel Town, Leta Fay Williams, "was a Deputy Sheriff, was instrumental in keeping the Post Office in town, and [also] operated Vacation Village." She died in 2005 at the age of 83.

  3. I don't think she's "letting" that squirrel drink that coca-cola, I don't think she had a choice. I think this place was very much like "Planet of the Apes" but on a far less ambitious scale.

  4. Mike - You bet!

Mark - Thanks so much for adding this info. I'm glad to be able to put a name with this place.

John - Planet of the squirrels! Sounds like fun!

I have been to squirrel town. It is now a C store. There used to be all kinds of critters in the store, deer, squirrels, coons... that was about thirty five years ago.

Leta Fay drove a white Caddy and had a pistol on each hip. She used to chase us on our dirt bikes. We called her "Dickless Tracy"

May I lend a little to this conversation? Faye was my Step grandfather's (PaPa) daughter. His name was Bill Moore. Yes indeed there was a "Squirrel Town" and as a child I would go there often. I even have pictures of me feeding a fawn deer almonds and letting it sip coca-cola from a cup. She also had crows that would talk and very tame blue jays that would talk.
