TEX MARSHALL AND HIS EDUCATED HORSES

Whatever happened to Tex Marshall and his educated horses? What? You’re not familiar with Tex and Pecos Sunny? Not to worry I’m not familiar with them either, but I bet they were a big draw in 1948 at this in-person appearance at the Carolina Theater in Burlington, North Carolina.

The newspaper ad is from 4-23-48 along with an original snapshot photo of the event.

Just look at this close-up of Pecos Sunny and even in the photo you can feel his superior intellect. His large horse brain could probably do complicated Algebra questions without hesitation. I’m sure he was able to guess someone’s weight and write the number in the dirt with his hooves. You never know, this horse just might’ve been a talking horse and just might’ve inspired another educated horse on TV.

Of course I have no clue about this as it looks like Tex Marshall and his Educated Horses are lost to history. At least we know what movie Tex and his horses enjoyed after their performance - Oklahoma Badlands starring Rocky Lane and some less-educated horses.

Boy, this b-movie western was probably in Smell-O-Vision thanks to all the real horses around!

MY NEATO NEPHEW LIKES TO DRAW & PAINT

Today, I want to show off some of my nephew's art from his art class in elementary. He’s been doing a super-duper job creating some very cool pieces. He’s eight years old and really has fun drawing and painting and I think it shows in his artwork. It really makes my day when one of his art pieces show up in my email. I'm proud of you kiddo! These are my favorites -

SHAZAM! MY MOM WAS A MEMBER OF THE MARY MARVEL CLUB

My mom was a charter member of the Mary Marvel Club back in 1945-46 and the amazing thing is that my grandmother saved mom’s letter from the club. Here’s the scan of the letter and envelope.

Mary Marvel’s Club was an exclusive all-girls club and just for joining each member got this magical badge that would transform Mary Batson into Mary Marvel each time the string was pulled and “SHAZAM” was shouted.

Mom’s badge apparently disappeared, so this photo comes from Hake’s Americana & Collectibles, where this cardboard badge sold for $230.00 back in January. (Ok mom, let’s hope this shows up buried in a drawer somewhere!)

Instead of advertising the club with a regular one page ad, those fun lovin’ Fawcett people introduced the club with an eight-page story. The club’s first appearance was in issue #39 of Wow Comics from Nov.-Dec. 1945 and the story title was Mary Marvel Launches Her Club. Here’s the full story by the Binder brothers with Otto writing and Jack drawing. Be sure to click on the pages to read them!

MONSTER MOTEL BUSINESS CARD

For fun I made up this business card for the Monster Motel. (Click on the card for a closer look)

Since most business cards use swiped or borrowed artwork, I decided to do the same. I used the monster from the classic 48" Talking Monster from Outer Space comic book ad.

There’s a reason I used those specific numbers for the address. Can anyone guess why? I'm sure most any monster fan will know!

THUMBS UP ON IRON MAN THE MOVIE

Iron Man has a side kick in the movie and his name is Li'l Shellhead! This is actually my 8 year old nephew wearing a very cool Iron Man helmet made by one of my oldest and best pals Jeff Roemer. We was showing it off at a recent Kansas City comic convention. I'm on the list for my very own sometime this year.

I saw the movie last night and I really enjoyed it. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark is perfect, one of the best castings in a comic book movie. Remember to stay for the end credits for a bonus scene.

DOGWOOD TREE

I always love this time of year because of the Dogwood tree. A drive thru the Ozarks is so much more pretty with patches of Dogwoods in bloom. Their white pedals seem to float in the woods like some type of ghost flower dancing in the breeze.

Yesterday I had some extra time to walk thru Ha Ha Tonka State Park (one of Missouri’s best state parks) snapping a few photos of Dogwoods for this post.

Take a few minutes today and find some natural beauty to enjoy.

Happy May Day everyone!

Here’s and old postcard from the 1960's and 70's that you could find for sale at every trading post and gift shop in the Ozarks.

This found snapshot was taken somewhere here in the Ozarks and is dated 1923. Someone made up a title - Blossom Time and Dogwood Days and added it to the top of the photograph. It looks like she’s preparing some type of arrangement using the limbs and flowers of a Dogwood.
