Hey kids, jar rubbers! Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!

Just think, most housewives always had a couple of boxes in the cupboards back in the day when canning was the thing to do. This box is probably from the 1930's. I only picked it up because of the cute ad character girls.

ILLUSTRATED WORLD WWI COVER

I was going thru some old files and found this scan of this amazing WWI era cover for Illustrated World. I'm afraid I sold it years ago, so I can only wonder about its content. The artwork has the feel of a 1930's pulp magazine and the artist, Chester H. Lawrence was definitely ahead of his time.

KRUSTEAZ PANCAKE MIX COOK BOOK

FLEA MARKET FRIDAYS #14

Today we have a 1960's Krusteaz Pancake Mix cookbook with a fun little elf character on the front and back cover. Unfortunately, the inside pages are not illustrated and there’s no indication what this elf’s name is. A good guess would be that his name is Krusty.



Krusteaz is part of Continental Mills out of Seattle, Washington. They’re still in business and have a website, continentalmills.com.

KORLA PANDIT

I was digging in the Neato Coolville archives the other day and found this 1951 autographed magazine and fan photo of the great and mysterious Korla Pandit!

Korla put most of America, especially women, in an exotic musical trance during television’s infancy. He soothed television audiences with his dreamlike songs that he played on the electric organ. With a simple smile, Korla would stare into the camera and melt the hearts of housewives without uttering or singing a single word.

A few quick facts on Korla -
He was born in St. Louis, Missouri and graduated high school in Columbia, Missouri.
Married Disney artist Beyrl June DeBeeson
Music director for Bob Clampett’s Beany and Cecil puppet show Time For Beany.
Appeared in Tim Burton’s movie, Ed Wood.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT

Today is the last episode of The Price Is Right with host Bob Barker. Like so many people, this game show has been part of our daily lives. This is no different for my wife and I since we’re only a couple of years older than the show and we both grew up watching The Price Is Right. She has fond memories of watching it with her mom and it was tradition for me to watch it with my grandma, who was a big game show fan.

The show was a big deal in college and I would usually meet up with some of my friends and watch it before class.

We finally had the opportunity to go to a taping of the show back in 1999. Seeing the show live was really an amazing and sometimes surreal experience.

In honor of Bob Barker retiring, I thought I would post a few things we have in our very small collection of The Price Is Right.

One of my favorite items, is this vintage (before TPIR) signed Johnny Olson photo.

Just this past May, we had the opportunity to see Bob Barker throw out the first pitch during a Springfield Cardinals game in Springfield, Missouri. Bob had received an honorary degree from Drury University earlier that day and was invited to throw out the first pitch at the game.



They even rolled out the green carpet so he could play the Hole In One. . . Or Two game!


We were lucky, as he was leaving, he stopped and signed a few autographs and posed for a couple of pictures. I had remembered to bring an old 1970's postcard just in case we had the chance to meet him. I’m glad I did, as we got our chance and he signed it for us. The big thrill, was that the first lady of Neato Coolville had her picture taken with Bob!


The show wont be the same without Bob Barker. Someday, I would like to see a best of DVD come out like the excellent Match Game DVD. Also, there should be a coffee table book with the history of the show and game stats.

BOWLING SCORECARD & 3M SANDPAPER

FLEA MARKET FRIDAYS #13

Now don’t worry, you didn’t forget to tear off Thursday’s Far Side calendar page and no you didn’t accidently travel into the future one day. Instead Flea Market Fridays got bumped up one day because tomorrow I’ll have a special post about one of America’s favorite game show hosts.

Last week I found two advertising items with snazzy graphics that Mr. C from Happy Days would appreciate.

The first one is a 1950's Personal Bowling Score Card from Brunswick.


I love the art by Walt Ditzen! Clever how the little bowling pin has taken off his red collar and turned it into a crown for the proud bowler man, better known as Gutter Gus. Walt Ditzen was the creator of the popular sports comic strip Fan Fare and he’s well known in the bowling world, as he created posters for the National Bowling Council.

I found this next item in a booth that was close to the same booth where I found the scorecard. It's an old pack of 3M Sandpaper, with nice artwork of a hardware store clerk.

My guess, is that this is also from the 1950's, but it might be a little older.

DOGPATCH AT LAKE OF THE OZARKS PHOTOS

Yesterday, I showed you some old postcards (I added one more to yesterdays post) from Dogpatch and today I've uploaded some modern photos of Dogpatch. I took these back in 2004 and you can see more on my Flickr site.

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, MO - DOGPATCH VILLAGE

Back in the 1940's most people who were regular funny paper readers were big fans of Al Capp’s Li’l Abner and this included Walter and Ada Tietmeyer. Shortly after moving to the Lake of the Ozarks, the Tietmeyers started a thriving tourist trap with a hillbilly theme and appropriately named it Dogpatch. Actually, it started out as the Dogpatch Café in 1947 and as Walter kept adding more buildings and unique oddities, it eventually became Dogpatch Village in the 1950's.

For six decades Dogpatch has entertained many generations of families with hillbilly novelties and kooky attractions. Some of the attractions from the past included a reptile garden, a real African lion, miniature automaton logging village with Paul Bunyan, an educated chicken, frog band, an authentic Ozark cabin, giant Redwood log, coin-op fortune teller, elephant skull, outhouse with a rude hillbilly, a rocket ship, player piano, talking hillbilly greeter, magic water faucet and a giant hillbilly (muffler man) statue.

To help celebrate Dogpatch’s 60th anniversary, I’ve included some vintage postcards and other related items.

This wonderful tourist attraction is still open and if you ever find yourself at the Lake of the Ozarks, be sure to visit Dogpatch.
